The iconic, undulating sand of Canada Heights played host to a thrilling day of motocross action, where NORA CRS Developments rider Rafe Symons overcame technical gremlins and racetrack drama to secure a hard-earned overall victory in the Small Wheel class.
The day started with a hurdle during timed qualifying. A transponder malfunction meant the timing system only registered three of Rafe’s four laps. Despite missing a crucial lap of data, Rafe’s blistering pace shone through as he locked down a brilliant second place on the grid.
Race 1 proved to be an absolute masterclass in persistent pressure. Rafe launched off the line to round the first corner in second place, immediately setting his sights on the holeshot taker. For lap after lap, the NORA CRS Developments rider applied relentless pressure, stalking the leader through the brutal Canada Heights ruts. The intensity finally told on the face of a jump; the leader blinked, made a critical error, and went down in a heavy crash. Rafe seized the lead in a flash, riding a smooth and calculated race from there to the chequered flag to claim a magnificent P1 finish.
With momentum on his side, Race 2 looked set to be a runaway victory. Rafe rocketed into an early lead, checked out from the field, and built a commanding 30-second cushion over P2. However, the treacherous circuit served up a reminder of its unpredictability. In a bizarre twist of fate, Rafe suffered a tumble in the exact same spot where the Race 1 leader had crashed. Proving his resilience, Rafe scrambled back to his feet in seconds, remounted, and crucially maintained his lead to cross the line for another spectacular victory.
The final race of the weekend demanded a true fightback. Rafe suffered a poor start and found himself with work to do. Digging deep, he sliced through the pack to chase down the race leader. Within just one lap, Rafe executed an expert, clinical overtake to snatch the lead.
Just as he looked set to complete the clean sweep, a fallen rider brought out a sudden red flag, halting the race prematurely. With the final results reverted to the standings of the previous lap, Rafe was cruelly denied the on-track win and classified in second place.
Despite the red-flag heartbreak, Rafe’s stellar 1-1-2 scorecard gave him more than enough points to rightfully claim the Overall Race Win. It was a phenomenal, character-building day in the sand—and the perfect preparation as Rafe heads to Culham next weekend for the final Round of the Plew British Masters.
