Sixth overall at Weston Beach Race for Joyner

Freddie Joyner made the journey to Weston-super-Mare last weekend for the famous Weston Beach Race. With Saturday’s proceedings stopped due to the adverse weather, all eyes moved to Sunday where all classes raced in a revised schedule.

Read Freddie’s race report below:

Weston Beach Race had to be the same weekend when we were all supposed to avoid sea fronts because of storm Amy, and yellow weather warnings!

Friday was great and weather was ok, I got to walk the track and was lucky enough to train with the one and only Todd Kellet, a real highlight for me and I feel that the training really helped me. I got a feel of the sand and the track, and had some great tips and advice from Todd.

Saturday morning I woke up thinking I was going to enjoy a whole day of watching some mega racing, but Storm Amy had other ideas, racing got cancelled and we had to wait until 5pm to find out about the new race schedule. I was happy as I knew I was still able to race.

Sunday it was go time! I ran to my bike before dad and got it started, in all the rush and commotion dad forgot to put my choke on but off I went trying to weave through the 113 riders.

I was pretty mid pack but as we got down through the long first start straight I was taken past quite a few riders. I knew something was wrong with my bike though and saw my dads friend waving, I quickly pulled over and he sorted the choke out and off I went feeling strong on the bike making passes quick as I knew I had only 45 minutes, so time was not on my side.

A few laps in I was sitting in 5th place in SW85cc. Dad was updating me on the pit board, I was taking good lines and staying strong. I had a quick pit stop to top up fuel and change my goggles and then got straight back out there to do the last part of the race.

A little fall on a corner cost me a few seconds but I got up and back on, it was nearing the end and I went down again, this time down for a bit longer, this cost me a place and took all my energy out of me. I knew I had to finish strong, I sped to the finish and took 6th place in Small Wheel 85cc and 23rd in Small Wheel 85cc and Big Wheel 85cc combined.

I’m very proud of myself for staying strong and not giving up the whole race, I wanted to do it all again straight after. That start straight is just something everyone needs to experience!

The biggest get well soon to Seb Brown, hope you heal up quick and can get back out there doing what you love, ripping!
